This romantic dramatic-comedy was the basis for the famous film starring Katharine Hepburn and Burt Lancaster. During a severe drought, we meet Lizzie, whose father and brothers are worried as much about her becoming an old maid as they are about the fate of their farm. Along comes a charismatic rainmaker who promises to bring rain, but also delivers love, romance and hope to Lizzie.

Midwestern drawls needed for most roles:

Lizzie Curry – (30-40) Lead – A “plain” unmarried woman who tends her family home, her father and brothers. Classified as an “old maid” in her time and place. But Lizzie is lit from within, with depth and beauty just waiting to be discovered. Strong, capable and an independent spirit. She yearns for romantic love and a family of her own. She still dreams of building a life with a strong man who loves her as she is, but feels that chance may have passed her by. A lovely and complex role for a strong actress.
Bill Starbuck – (35-45) Lead – A boisterous, charismatic con man on the run from the law. A loud braggart on the outside, but down deep a gentle dreamer. Handsome, rough around the edges, masculine, lithe and agile in his movements. His larger-than-life persona hides his disappointments and failures in life. Promises to bring rain to end the drought. Like Lizzie, he still dreams of finding romance and beauty. His encounter with Lizzie changes both of them. A great and challenging role for a strong, magnetic actor.
H.C. Curry – (Male 55 +) Strong Support – Lizzie’s father. Capable, strong, a man that takes care of things. Loving, kind, warm, he is an imaginative dreamer at heart. Cares deeply for all his children but especially wants Lizzie to find love and happiness. He will take a chance on Starbuck to make that happen.
Noah Curry – (35-45) Strong Support – Lizzie’s older brother. Strong and capable like his father but without the imagination. Stoic, no-nonsense, somewhat self-righteous, rigidly opinionated, not much humor. A decent man who loves his family but who is afraid or unwilling to take a chance on a dream.
Jim Curry – (20-30) Strong Support – Lizzie’s younger brother. Lovable, excitable, but not too bright. Has a goofy sense of humor and a big heart. Always being told what to do and how to do it by Noah, he longs for more adventure and passion in his life. Has a weakness for a wild young blonde in a red hat.
File – (Male 35-45) Strong Support – The deputy sheriff of the town. Reticent, intelligent, somewhat bitter but his bitterness is leavened with mischievous humor. He is in love with Lizzie but doesn’t trust women or his feelings for them. His wife ran off and left him and he is afraid of being thought a fool and being abandoned again. Pretends to be a widower instead of divorced. A good man with a bruised heart.
Sheriff Thomas – (Male 50 +) Cameo – Sheriff of the town and File’s boss. Nice, friendly, but is still a tough lawman. Very fond of File and encourages him to take another chance on love and find happiness.
